dialer threat

Dec 3, 2003 12:26PM PST

I am using Windows ME, IE6 and Nav2004. I updated my virus definations tonight and ran a scan and it came up 0 viruses, and 2 at risk files. The treats were called Dialer.Tibs I tried to delete them according to the Norton instructions and it comes up delete failed. I tried this twice and got the same thing. I also ran trend Micro housecall and they didn't show up there. How can I get these off. I checked the symantec site and all I can find is to update definitions and run a scan. Which I have twice.

Help please and keep it simple, Not real computer litterate

Thanks

Nancy, After Following Keith's Instructions....

...to disable System Restore, then restart the computer into "Safe Mode", then run a full system virus scan with Norton again. You should be able to delete the dialers at that time. Here's how to restart in 'Safe Mode':

Restart the computer, pressing the F8 key once per second, till it loads a selection screen. Use the up and down arrows to select "Safe Mode", press enter, and the computer will load into a safe mode. It looks like a normal screen but with Safe Mode in each of the four corners. When you?re done running the scan, restart the machine and it will boot normally.

Hope this helps.

(NT) Nancy, You Didn't Say That You Restarted In 'Safe Mode', then....

...ran the scan, or manually deleted the file. If Windows is using a file, and won't allow it to be deleted, you'll need to restart in "Safe Mode". Did you try it after disabling System Restore, THEN restart in "Safe Mode", the run the scan. Or if necessary find the file in Windows Explorer and simply RIGHT click on the file, choose "Delete".

Hope this helps.

Should have asked this question a long time ago...
Dec 4, 2003 11:43AM PST

What is the exact error message for why the file can't be deleted? File in use? File not found?

Sorry about the System Restore suggestion. That's usually the most common cause for files not deleting (although if you do manage to delete it, it will end up in System Restore...). Should have asked for the file name right away.
