Dial up no data transfer after about 2-3mins

Sep 28, 2007 3:35PM PDT

Ok guys sorry if this is a bit rough. my first post here

My dad has an old computer. windows 98se and we are having some dial up issues to the internet.

The basic outline is

we can connect to the internet, after about 2 - 3 minutes we find that we can not download webpages. but within that 2 - 3minute range we can. the system shows that we are still connected to the internet.

to get it the internet to work again we need to reboot the system.

it started hapening about a week ago. as far as he knows there were no new programs installed. he does not download any files from the net and does not open any unknown email documents. im thinking virus but the virus scanners dont pick any thing up. i used AVG and spybot.

being windows 98 my usual virus detecters are not supported Sad

its just dam strang that it happend all of a sudden and we have had no other issues b4. yes i have tried firefox and ie both the same issue

any help?

sorry about the 'roughness' of this post i just dont have much time at present thanks for any suggestions

oyea i live in NEw Zealand if thats any help

no extra services such as call waiting or anythign like that.

Old computer? Parts do die. Modems can be had for a pittance.

"last resort" = Try Linux next.

When an owner insists on that we try Linux. If it doesn't work in Linux we know it's the modem and get to charge for the diagnostics (cha-ching) which sadly cost more than the modem. But some will pay for that.
