Dial up networking update 1.3 is greatly slowing down my connection time

Nov 21, 2003 5:21AM PST

I installed a trial of AOL on my computer from a CD. It installed dial up networking update 1.3 without my knowledge. It greatly slows down me connecting to the internet. When I try to delete it from add/remove programs it says it will delete the entire dial up networking program if I delete 1.3. How do I get rid of it and go back to the original program that I had? I have Windows 95.

I have installed 1.4, and it is still taking too long to get connected to the net compared to before I got all of these updates. How can I get rid of it and go back to the previous program that I had without all these updates?

Have you tried downloading and installing the latest modem drivers for your machine. If you haven't updated your modem drivers, it's very possible that they don't correctly support the DUN updates. I recommend trying to find the new modem drivers before doing anything.

Since your problem also started with AOL, then I'd suggest uninstalling AOL because it can frequently cause issues with connections when other Internet Service Providers are also installed. AOL is probably the culprit and not the dial-up networking installation.

How long is "long" when you connect? I know some folks that require a couple of minutes for the connection to actually take place but when connection is made, it works fine and the speed is appropriate.

Have you though about obtaining a new modem which will have all it's own software for installation. The modem may be part of the problem and an updated one may solve your issue.

And just in case, do you have a "Recovery CD" for the computer, or do you need to use a Win95 CD and reinstall all the programs if nothing else will fix the issue? Personally, I would attempt to find a full version of Windows 2000 and upgrade the Win95 machine to the more current version. You'll still need to hunt down appropriate Win2000 drivers for the machine, but the DUN programs and others would be more updated. Hopefully you are aware that Windows 95 is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

Grif I seem to remember something about " Netwok Connection, or Connect to Network" in earlier DUN settings, that if checked, would cause a definite delay in connecting. Sorry I can't seem to find more info about it right now, but maybe you remember it.
Just thinking that if he installed a new DUN, this may be checked by default.

You can decrease the time required to connect by making sure that the following options are not selected when not required:

Log On To Network

NetBEUI

IPX/SPX Compatible
