This is where DELL keeps its Customers UP&RUNNING..
The Conexant Modem uses a complete CD-install w/NO Updates..
If you purchase a New Non-DELL Modem your in need of Registration and Updates..and if the Update is a ZIP File..your going to need that UPDATE from Windows..
So a new modem requires consideration..
I use my DELL Modem to re-install my PC..and then un-install it for my USROBOTICS 5669B/modem..and need the Microsoft Update service to get that Update FILE to open..and install..plus I pull my RAM down to 512MB's for re-Installs..and add the second Module later that day..and all VIRUS Scanning MUST be turned off for working inside ADD/REMOVE Programs..firewalls are mostly OK.
I've just bought I new 56k modem to go in pc I'm selling to a relative. The reason I bought a new modem was because after re-installing the old one after some years in the drawer(I use wireless broadband), it didn't appear to work (no clicking sounds from the modem speaker).
So off i went to Maplin & bought the new one, installed it as per the instructions i.e. install pci card switch on pc cancel windows installer & install drivers from the disc provided. nada zip - I'm getting error 680 no dialing tone detected, which is of course because the modem isn't coming to life & hearing the phone line.
BTW I'm running XP pro, I've tried different pci slots, deleting com ports, removing all the .inf files from previous installs, downloading different drivers, the only thing I haven't done is reformat my hard drive & re-install XP again (I really want to avoid this, but if it's the only way I'll do it)
Am I missing some clean removal trick that can configure the new modem?
Please help I'm going nuts here!
thanks in advance.
