diagonal lines via HDMI

I just bought and installed a sony(DVP-NC85H)upconverting dvd player. I opted to go with a 25 dollar 1 metre HDMI cable. I've noticed "wave like" lines streaming diagonally across my screen. I've checked both ends of the connection and the cable is as straight as it can be. I went through all the possible options of my dvd player and I can't seem to get rid of them. The component output works fine. Is that what I get for cheaping out on a cable? Anybody got any suggestions?

I've been looking online and it's some sort of electrical interference or possible a ground loop. The cable itself might not even be properly shielded. Is there anything else anybody can tell me?
