Question

Diagnosing no start 77 Chevy 350

Jan 12, 2015 10:52AM PST

I recently bought an rv with an older Chevy 350 in it. It started and ran great until yesterday when it suddenly stopped. I ran it every day since buying it over week ago but then missed two days due to travel and now that I'm home it won't start....

I have learned that in diagnosing a no start, spark, fuel, and compression are the things that need to be tested. The engine turns over but doesnt start. The battery is fine, and I tested the HEI on someone's recommendation and it seems to be giving me the right readings. Fuses seem to be intact but the wording is all rubbed off on the box and i have no owners manual so I'm not sure which fuse is actually the ignition. Someone else suggested I take off the distributor and rotor to get to the ignition module and have that tested down at Autozone but I haven't gotten that far yet.

I will admit I am very ignorant when it comes to engines and cars in general. I'm normally more of a computers guy, but I bought this old 350 knowing I would need to learn how to work on it. I am looking for help diagnosing/testing the spark, fuel and compression. I know these are fairly basic things but I simply haven't learned them yet. Any assistance or links to instructions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new to working on cars but I'm not an idiot. There is over a half a tank of gas in it. Please only reply if you're going to post something worthwhile.

Suddenly stopped being able to start. Sorry if that was confusing or misleading. If you read the whole post or the subject header this is about starting the engine.
