" i KNOW this isn't the case and that once hooked up to my cable modem i should be able to receive the signal. i do but can't connect to the internet. "
The reason for the initial ethernet connection is to configure the router. Newer routers may or may not come ready to use over the wifi. And no router I've seen will just hook up and work for all the possible ISPs that are out there.
Step back and follow the instructions. You'll likely succeed.

i am trying to connect my DI-624 wireless router to my cable modem so that i can use my wireless laptop without having it tethered. i am confused by the directions because it implies that i would be connecting it to a stationary main computer via the ethernet cable and then i would be able to network my laptop. i mean i KNOW this isn't the case and that once hooked up to my cable modem i should be able to receive the signal. i do but can't connect to the internet.
the other thing is, i thought i might configure my laptop while it was connected to the ethernet cable, just incase, (the only time i had an internet connection) and my LAN was showing an intel device and not recognizing the d-link and i am not able to change it.
at one time i was inserting an external antenna into those side slots (i know, i'm hopeless) to steal internet from my neighbor (temporarily! don't yell at me!) so i am assuming it is recognizing that old configuration?
i'm not great with this stuff and it may be really obvious, but any help would be appreciated. if you need more info let me know.
help!
