It sounds like the router has failed. I rarely fuss with old routers but always try the full reset then set it up for a test run. If it fails I swap in another router and re-test.
If I suspect a PC, I always carry in my phone and laptop to see if they work. Owners can take their phone or laptop to a free hotspot to see if it works out there.
In parting, always try FORGETTING all networks in phones and PCs.

Hello everyone, I hope you can help as I am at a loss. We've got a Netgear wireless router that is giving us issues. We can see the router in our network lists (both windows-based PC's and Android and IOS wireless devices) but when we go to connect, 19 times out of 20, we can't, even when the password is correct and nothing else has changed. When plugged into the router with a cable, the connection is fine and we get a good IP address and connection, but wirelessly, we simply cannot connect. We have taken to plugging in a little TPlink wireless modem (i.e. not a router) into a Ethernet port as a quasi-repeater and connecting wirelessly through that, but it seems weird. Once in a blue moon, we can connect, but then with no warning, the router will drop the device and it will revert back to the "repeater" connection.
When the devices try to connect to the router, it asks for a password, so it seems to be verifying the connection requirements, but then when we enter the password, we just get a "cannot connect to network". I have tried: factory reset, router firmware update, changing router channel, clearing the DNS cache (i.e. winsock) on my laptop, connecting my laptop to another wireless network - works fine and I am now out of ideas. As I say, there is the same problem for android and iOS devices as well.
In what circumstances will a router "broadcast" i.e. appear on the wireless network list, but not allow connection? Is it a hardware problem? Do I need a new modem. It just seems so strange that it is there at all and the signal is strong, but we can't connect.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
