devices appearing on router

Nov 25, 2016 2:08PM PST

Can someone answer this one for me please. This morning i got internet installed and while only having my phone and laptop connected to the network, i noticed while checking out the router settings that my apple tv appears on the list and so did my ipad. having not connected them to the network in any shape or form, how does the router know that my apple tv and ipad is there? ps: i dont know much about computers but this one blows my mind and cant seem to figure it out. thanks in advance!

the router, you should have seen your SSID and then a note about it being "secure" if it's encrypted. You can also access the router program by opening your brower and putting in it's IP address and check it there. For instance on my router that is 192.168.1.1, which is common access IP, but check your manual if that doesn't work, or it may be on a sticker on the bottom of the router, along with the default password.
