Device not available

Hi,

I have a problem with my DVD burner. When I start up my computer, the BIOS finds it no problem. It shows on Windows Explorer and I can read CDs and DVDs. The problem is when I burn, I get this message "Device not available". I put a different burner, I get the same message. Any help will be appreciated.

The DVD burner shows as LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S.

Thanks

Windows XP SP3

My internal dvdrw did same. However it's dead now.

More about what to try with yours. Boot SAFE MODE (see google about things you don't know) and head to the DEVICE MANAGER to remove, delete, or uninstall all CD/DVD drives.

Reboot and retest.

Hi Bob,

I tried that option of restarting in safe mode but it didn't work. When I try to erase a CD or DVD, it works fine, but writing, S.O.L.

That's bad. Very bad.

When Windows can't start in safe mode then the OS has been damaged.

I'd plan on a complete fresh install.

Hi Bob,

I didn't mean windows did not start in safe mode. It did. I meant the DVD burner not burning.

And I didn't write to try to use the drive in safe mode.

That's not what you wrote.

While it is suspect you actually accomplished the task the next items are:

1. The filter removal as noted by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
AND NO!!! I use this article for the HOW TO and not for the error!!!

2. Trying software such as CDBURNERXP, ACTIVE ISO BURNER.

If that fails the hardware (drive) is likely dead. You should try the usual CD/DVD lens cleaner too.
