device manager mmc prob

by MagicalPeanut / September 17, 2005 9:33 PM PDT

My computer froze while i was using winamp. At the moment my keyboard is playing up so i have to open up the device manager to fix the problem when the computer has been shut down. This time, however, upon attempting to open the dvice manager i recieved the following message with "mmc.exe" as the window header:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Now, i've tried rebooting, using hijack this (log available), and i've searched for info on the net. Nothing has helped though. I'm fairly certain it's not an admin access issue because nobody who uses the computer even knows what that means (concequently we wouldn't know how to ammend such a problem), and i don't think it's a virus/worm etc.

Can anybody help me so i don't keep having to use this tedious on-screen keyboard (took me ages to write this) Sad

Does the keyboard work to get to the BIOS?

If not, it's not a XP issue. It's a hardware issue.

Not the issue

I don't know how to get to the bios. Besides, it's not the keyboard that's the issue, it's the mmc error. I should have made that clearer sorry. Even if the keyboard was working i would still have the error, right?

FIXED
by MagicalPeanut / September 18, 2005 12:03 PM PDT

Just so nobody wastes their time on this topic anymore, the situation has been fixed. Turns out it was the firewall blocking my access. I checked it out before but couldn't find anything blocking any access. But i just turned it off and tried again and it worked.

Never happened before, but ah well. Thanks for the help!
