Question

desktop will not start

Oct 18, 2016 10:02AM PDT

my hp pavilion m9300t won't start. i presumed it is the SMPS.
ordered a new one off amazon but did not notice that the fan on the new smps faces down and i need it to face out and back.
I plugged in the cable from the new smps and the light still came on behind the cabinet. that did not come on with the old cable. the computer still would not turn on with the new cable. any idea what could be going on?

is it ok to install the new smps with the fan facing down?
could there be any other issue like a blown motherboard?

nothing turns on with the old SMPS and old power cable
new power cable and old smps, the light on the back of the cabinet lights up showing power is going through

Answer
Having used both.

I can't guess why it must be facing one way or another. As long as it moves air the same way, I don't see the concern here.

And yes to the last question.

the grill in the cabinet for letting the air flow out is in the back. if the new smps pushes the air down into the cabinet, it will heat up the other components in the cabinet

So the air flow is reversed.

You have a choice here to return and try again or if you are handy, open the PSU and flip the fan over. About 99% of the models I know let me flip the direction.

Your choice at the end of the day what to do.

Remember I take it the new SMPS fixed it. If not did you do THE GREEN WIRE PSU test (google that) and what voltages did it put out? No connection is needed to the motherboard or other things for this test.

...there are other issues until you try out the new smps?

Turn off the computer, then remove any discs and USB devices, then remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices (printers, scanners, external hard drives, and similar). Remove or disconnect all discs and devices from the computer, except for the mouse, keyboard and monitor.
