Just make a shortcut to the url. On the desktop:
1. Right click>New shortcut.
2. Type or copy the url: http://www.gmail.com
3. Give a nice name, like gmail
4. OK

Open your browser, then use the mouse to "drag" the address bar URL to your desktop.. Depending on the browser, you use the RIGHT click drag or a LEFT click drag but once done, it should give you the option to create a shortcut to the website.
Hope this helps.

I am using Microsoft Internet Explorer. I don't understand when you are on IE's page how you can drag it to the desk top which is on a different place that is covered up by IE.
The desktop is only covered up if you run IE maximized. But in a non-maximized window, it leaves part of the desktop visible to drag and drop to.

I added a link on mt favorites tool bar for yahoo and live email. This works very will with a single click. It should work with any email.
That way, you have to launch your browser first.
By creating a link on your desktop, when you click it, it will launch your browser AND go to that website with one click.

If you click the right-side mouse button on the main Gmail page, then click Create Shortcut - a Gmail shortcut will be created on your desktop!
Windows XP
Open your browser, e.g. Internet Explorer.
In the address bar, type mail.yahoo.com or gmail.com.
Click FILE - SEND - SHORTCUT TO DESKTOP.
Repeat with your alternate email or web address.
From there, you may also drag your desktop icon to your Start Menu (drag and hold it over the Start button, then pull it to the Start Menu location at the upper left of that menu,) or to the Quicklaunch Toolbar (beside the Start button) if it's active. (Right-click the Start button taskbar to activate.)
