I recently was having a similar problem.......
Jun 6, 2005 3:49PM PDT

with icons doing funny things like a pacman icon which created a second of itself and imposed it over a different games existing icon. When you clicked the "clone" you still opened the correct game. After a few days the problem seemed to spread. Started inside a desktop "games folder" and soon started affecting main icons on the desktop itself. Some of the game programs with the icon effect started causing error warnings and in one case the icon, (for a game I had deleted along with its icon) mysteriously reappeared several times.
My 1st thought was virus/spyware but all tested clean.
I finally decided it was being caused by corrupted system files in my XP Pro (32bit). After successfully running a System File Check (Run> SFC /Scannow) with my install disk in CD-RW drive the problem seemed to vanish and hasn't returned in the week or so since. It may have been a lucky combination of deleting the corrupted source program and the SFC fixing the damage caused by same. Hope this helps !! Happy

I also had this problem recently on XP 32 bit OS (still waiting for x64 in the mail).
Can't figure out what caused it.
With desktop problems in the past, xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs
has fixed it. Sorry I haven't got the link for you on this, but I think it was from Kelly's Corner, or something like that. You might want to have a search for it and see if it helps at all. Has fixed a multitude of desktop problems in the past.

Plug n' Play

There's a known connection with this and task bar, quick launch etc. I read somewhere that if you disable p n'p it affects these items. There's a small utility available which is preferable, as it might save grief:

Now affested are my NEC CD-ROM CD-3002A, DVDRW IDE1008, as well as several other settings and programs. Have tried everything I could think of and all other suggestions.
