Question

Desktop icons disappear

Jun 12, 2016 4:14PM PDT

I apologize if this has been covered before but I can't find search for this forum.

About every two weeks the icons disappear from the desktop just leaving the titles. This pc also just has titles. If I right click and choose properties nothing happens.

I've tried all the suggestions found on Google with no results. The only thing that works is restoring the C drive with a Shadowprotect backup.

Any suggestions as how to prevent this?

Answer
Nothing comes to mind with a stock Windows 10.

I wonder if this is some other app that is on your PC. I'd take inventory of what's on your PC and remove any cleaner or PC speed up apps along with registry cleaners.

That's a good suggestion

I was trying an internet accelerator which I don't need with 50 mg bandwidth and something called dns jumper. I'll remove both and see if the icons last longer than 2 weeks.

Getting rid of those 2 programs

seemed to work. It's been 3 weeks and the icons still remain. I'll be more careful about installing dodgy programs. The funny thing is neither Webroot or Malwarebytes found any problems.

Thanks for the report back.

As the office is accelerating to W10 (30 days for the free upgrade) I see a lot more W10 now and am working the upgrade area a lot.

So far, so good and didn't see the issue you noted. Those speed up apps are often dodgy so I never install them.
