Desktop icons Appear Twice

have an HP ZD7015US running Windows Media Center 2004. After I "upgraded' to SP2, all the icons on the desktop appear twice. I am using the "Classic" start menu and the shortcuts are only installed in one place (C:/Documents and Settings/All users/Desktop.)I have searched for duplicate keys in the registry and the double icons appear even when doing a clean boot. Does anyone know what causes this qand how to fix it.

Desktop folders

In reply to: Desktop icons Appear Twice

Did you know there are more than one Desktop folder?

One for you, one for All Users, one for Administrator, and one each for any other accounts on your system.

If the icons appear in both your Desktop folder and the "All Users" Desktop folder, then they will be displayed twice.

In Windows Explorer, goto Tools > Folder Options, View files, to show hidden files and folders, then look under Documents & Settings for the other user accounts.

I hope this help.

In reply to: Nope, Desktop Shortcuts are Only In One Place

1] What happens when you create an icon on the desktop, does another one appear immediately?

2] Do the duplicate icons work? (I have heard of wallpaper images of desktops being created by viruses, and as these images include images of the icons, it looks like there are double the number of icons).

3] What happens when you delete one? Does the other disappear as well?

4] Does this happen in Safe Mode?

5] Does this happen in other accounts?

6] Does this happen in WIndows XP mode, (ie, not Classic mode)?

7] You say all icons are saved to the All Users/Desktop folder. Does that mean that "no other accounts" have shortcut icons in their account's Desktop folders?

Cool If this is XP Home, have you checked the hidden Administrator's account that appears when Safe Mode is selected? (I'm not sure why I am asking that, just for a fuller picture).

9] What do you use to protect yourself against hackers, viruses, spyware and adware?

Question No. 10....

In reply to: Nope, Desktop Shortcuts are Only In One Place

....Do the duplicated icons have duplicated names with a (2) after them ?

?What happens if you use the XP view of the start menu ?

?If you have the "Quick Launch Bar", what happens if you click at the "show desktop" icon ?

?Right ckick at the desktop for a drop down menu, click at "Arrange Icons", then click (uncheck) "show desktop icons" - do the desktop icons disappear ?

?Go back and click (check) the item, do the desktop icons reappear ? Duplicted as before ?

What I have Found So Far

In reply to: Question No. 10....

Windows Media Center is based on XP Pro (I know, that means similar but different,) and other users with Pro have not had the same problem. The problem started after I upgraded to SP2. I have searched the registry for "desktop" and "icons' but have not found any duplicate keys. I assumed that Media Center might have a different key that controls the display of icons than other variations of XP and it would still remain after upgrading to SP2, but have not found anything.

The duplicate icons appear when doing a clean boot or in safe mode. The icons appear immediately after the shortcut is created. The icons appear when logged in as administrator.i am using Trend Micro PC-Cillin and have checked for spyware with Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, as well as Trend Micro's anti-spyware program.
