Question

desktop folder in windows xp

Mar 18, 2014 5:57AM PDT

I am trying to clean up a computer for someone else to use, and under "Documents and Settings", there is a company name (Axia), with all the folders (including "my documents") under that subfolder. I wanted to get rid of the company folder, so I tried to move the folders under "C:/", beginning with the "desktop" folder. The computer started telling me that access is denied to this drive (which I should have known), and would not stop sending me that message. Also, that I could not move "desktop", I pressed OK, closed everything, and restarted my computer. Now my desktop folder has been moved to the folder "914bd8b9eb0173d6639", and when I try to access it or move it back, I get the "access denied" popup. Also, my desktop icons are no longer showing. I've tried to do a restore system to yesterday, but I get the message that I haven't changed anything.

Answer
Most desktop folders are in the User's "profile"

Why not create a new Admin account (make 2!) and then a new User account of your choice then remove the old users and these can now go away.

PS. Why your desktop icons are gone.

You deleted them. I take it you didn't know that what's on your desktop is in the desktop folder. I know folk don't want to know how Windows works but just so you know, you blew them away with all these deletes. And since these are not system files, system restore will not bring them back.

How long have you administered Windows?
