Desktop background choices in control panel are missing

by dearmschris / May 3, 2012 11:50 PM PDT

When I start up my computer, the desktop background is black. I did some antivirus searches, McAfee, Malwarebytes and nothing came up. Then I went into the control panel. When I open 'choose a desktop background', the screen below the Windows wallpaper is blank. If I run my mouse over where the images should be, a light blue square is shown along with the name of the image, like 'HP Radiance' along with its properties. When I click on a light blue box then click okay, there is still no picture on the wallpaper. The only thing I'm able to do with the wallpaper is to choose a solid color. Any suggestions?

Do you still see icons
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / May 4, 2012 5:25 AM PDT

on the Desktop, and the Taskbar? If so, does everything else work as expected?

Have you changed Windows Themes lately? In Display Properties there is a tab for Themes I believe. What happens if you try the default theme?

Has this ever worked, and if so, what has changed on this system since it last worked?

I see the icons on my desktop. The background is black. I tried to change the theme and when I click on windows vista as a choice, I can see the color and design in the dialog box. When I click okay, my entire screen goes black and white and I get a message to please wait. Then I can click apply - but my desktop is still black.

May I ask if it ever worked, and if so, what has changed on the system since it last worked?

One more thing to check. In Display Properties, click the Desktop tab and then the "Customize Desktop" icon. Does a new window open? If so, can you see a tab for "Web"? If so click that.

There should only be one entry there for "My Current Home Page", and that should not be selected. If it is selected then remove the tick. If there are any others selected, remove the ticks and delete them.

Other than that, can you try a System Restore back to when it last worked?

There may be another possibility. Can you view images as normal, eg photos, and such things, and can you view videos normally? If not, then I wonder if this is a sign your video card is failing. I am no expert so don't take my word as anything other than a guess.

So I just realized I'm posting in XP and my system is Vista. I've reposted in Vista along with some new issues that have popped up this morning! Thanks for your help.
