Denon Blu-Ray problem - HELP

Jul 17, 2009 7:35AM PDT

This one even stumps the folks at Denon customer support.

Components:
Yamaha RX-V1900 Receiver
Denon DVD-3800BDCI
Samsung LN46A850

Everything is connected via high quality HDMI cables. Blu-Ray to receiver. Receiver to TV.

When I connect my TV to my HDMI cable the receiver won't decode the bitstream audio and I get 2 channel PCM sound. When I disconnect the TV I get 7.1 channel HiDef audio (DTS or Dolby - whichever BluRay I have running). It's immediately decoded. So I either get great video with 2 channel sound or no video with 7.1 channel sound!!! I tried bypassing the receiver and get the same result.

The customer support people at Denon are trying to help but they have no idea what is going on. They have never heard of this before and have called me back twice.

This is my second blu-ray player from Denon. Same model, same problem as the first one. Anyone have any ideas??? (Yes, I have tried every possible setting configuration both on my TV and my blu ray player and the problem won't go away!

Blu Ray problem

That is truly baffling. I have same set up with Onkyo 806, Sharp LC-52D62 and Panasonic BDP35 with no problem using cheapo HDMI cables. Have you tried it with a Blu Ray player other than Denon? It's hard to believe you would get two Denon's that are duds, but you never know. If the problem follows a brand other than Denon then it's not the Blu Ray player. Borrow one from a friend if you haven't tried this already.

HDMI has a copy protection feature that is nothing less than trouble when you connect any device inbetween the player and the TV.

Since you may not see any fix coming since any HDMI or HDCP or DRM (google the terms you don't know) issue, try this. On the Samsung poke around for an Anynet feature and turn it off.

Good luck!

Not sure if this will help....

I get the same issue on my Sony if I have selected in the output options AMP+TV, I have to pick AMP only or some DTS DVD's will go PCM on me. Your options are likely to be labled differently, I think this of more of that wonderful copy protection.

In any event, when I pick the option to let the output only go out of my receiver speakers only (Amp) then all is good and I get bitstream DTS decode in whatever DTS mode the DVD is in. I would look around for something like that in your receiver set-up options.

So in my case, there is no Audio on the HDMI between the receiver and the TV (ie the TV speakers do not work) but there is up to full 1080p video going from the Blu-Ray --> Receiver ---> TV and bitstream audio going HDMI from the Blu-Ray --- > Receiver ---> 7.1 Surround Speakers.

As soon as I pick, even in mid-play of a DVD, AMP+PC the receiver jumps to PCM and no way to force it back until I pick AMP only.

Hope this helps.
