I have a YamahaRX-V870 that is 12-14 years old. Will these Onkyo receivers be a good replacement? Much difference between 705 and 805? I am not very up to date on these matters as you can tell with still having an old receiver. Any other suggestions would be very helpful.

there is WAY TOO MUCH info about your setup and practices that you have not offered. Just WAY too much info missing.

Anyways, I am not at all familiar with your receiver. however, being that old, I think its time to upgrade. (then again, you never mentioned many things that are pertinent to this thread). Do you even have Dolby pliix, or are you still in the caveman days of Pro Logic without discrete center channel.

The differences between 705 and 805 include:
- 36 amps vs 60 amps (by far the biggest factor between the two)
- top of the line BurrBrown DAC for 805
- THX Select2 for 705, Ultra2 for 805
- 805 also has zone 3

but like I said, its the difference in current capabilities that will set it apart the most.

For HT audio, the most important aspects could very well be

- speakers that can handle extreme dynamics
- amp that can handle extreme dynamics

You will not be disappointed by improving on the 705 to the 805. I can guarantee that.

If you don't care about HDMI 1.3 stuff, high definition audio, etc, ie Master Audio, then I would definitely look at other brands as well, including Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon, HK, etc. At this point, I would just try to go for the best amp section possible while maintaining any features you might desire. Think amp.
