Dells at Costco

Dec 7, 2009 1:15AM PST

Costco has some pretty sweet deals on Studio XPSs right now, but wondered about adding a couple things after purchase. One is the 9000 comes with a NVIDIA GT220. How expensive is it for me to swap out to a 240, and does that void the warranty. And, can My Tech Team be added? I only know of XP and thought I might need a little "hand holding" to get up to speed on 7. What is XPS support like? I hear horror stories about Inspiron support, but have nothing but good experience with my Pro Support on my business laptop.

Despite the sweetness of the Costco deal, in the long run you'll do better dealing directly with Dell. I do not believe you'll be able to use My Tech Team with a system purchased through Costco. If you keep an eye out on the deal sites, like Techbargains and Slickdeals, I'm fairly confident you can get a deal equal to that of Costco at Dell.

You must mean Costco's return policy because while they have a very generous return policy and now have some kind of tech support, I don't think they have any kind of warranty service. Dell would have to cover that end.

Has anyone tried Costco's tech support, for computers, and is it any good?

One more thing...

Costco does NOT provide the operating system disc or other media. Their site says you get the Dell-installed system recovery tool. Of course, should your hard drive die, that revcovery tool is useless.

Dell provides OS, Resource and other application discs standard.

Been thinking of a different direction

The more I think about it, the more I think I'm going to pass. With all the bad experiences I've been reading about Dell's Home and Small Business support (and QC issues) the more I'm looking about one of their Business computers like an Optiplex or Precision. I've had good luck (so far) with a Latitude and Dell's Business Support. When I looked at the Studio XPS 8000 at Best Buy, I wasn't that impressed. It struck me as a bit cheesy, lightweight and flimsy. I think Dell is cranking out their Home stuff a little too fast (seems to be complaints of long waits to get systems), with some MB problems. I think Dell builds their Business systems to last, and takes better care of the Business customers for Tech Support.
