dell xps m2010 can't find hard drive

i have lovingly rebuilt a dell xps m2010laptop from the unassembled parts that were given to me, fitted new ram and hd.i have powered it up, it runs diagnostics ok but cannot find the hard drive, is this a motherboard error?
i would dearly love to get this wonderful looking piece of kit working

'it runs diagnostics ok'..............what does that mean?

'but cannot find the hard drive'..........what does that mean?

it has a diagnostic utility in the bios which it runs
but cannot detect a hard drive, i have tried three hard drives and tried changing the hard drive cable

Assuming you didn't forget the power cable to the hard drive and it has power and the disk runs, it seems like a motherboard problem indeed.

wondered if it had raid enabled perhaps i remembered it has the potential for two hard drives, swapped the drive over to the second bay and the bios found it, putting solaris on now and well go from there

That machine has 2 drive bays.

The one on the left is the primary.
The one on the right is the secondary.
As per the service manual.

If your not going to use raid you might want to turn that bios feature off.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
