Dell Vostro v13 Fan Noise

Feb 5, 2010 3:51PM PST

Hi,

I bought the v13 with intel core 2 duo 7300, 4gb ram, 320gb 7200 hard drive and Windows 7 32 bit. I think the product is fantastic but having a problem ? the fan is constantly staying on from boot. This contradicts all the reviews I have read about this laptop being quiet and energy efficient. I contacted dell but all they said was a bios update may be released in the next two weeks and that should sort it.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice? I love the v13 and its a brilliant product but if I cannot sort the fan issue its going back.

Thanks

I think you have no choice but to wait for the BIOS update.

Fan noise update from my original post - its the HD
Feb 13, 2010 5:16PM PST

Hi,

Thanks for replying. Turns out it is the hard drive that is making the fan type noise. Its very loud and appears I am not the only one who is having this issue.

I am going to replace the HD without a quieter 5,400 rpm hard drive until SSD's come down a bit in price later this year (I have an unused spare - Ill use the one in the v13 at present as a backup hd). I can't see a BIOS update reducing the noise of the HD. Although reading the specs on the HD they fitted, it looks like its meant for gamer level performance. My thoughts on this are due to the thin design of the vostro v13, any noise is more prevailent or not what would you expect for this product. It also gets hot at the front right side.

As a general comment, Dell customer service is poor - they have not replied to any of my complaints. So I feel I have paid

You're not alone in your frustration.

I'm just wondering why you don't call Dell for a replacement drive?

There is NO support for issues like this.

And Windows either. But that's not why I write.

There is something we can do about hard drive noise on SOME MODELS. Not a Dell model will help here but the model of the drive.

This won't reduce rotational noise but seek noise. Here's a google to let you into the club of knowledge about this -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Hard+Drive+Acoustic+Management
