Question

Dell Resource CD

Dec 26, 2012 5:42AM PST

Hi guys,

I'm having a lot of difficulty attempting to run the dell resource cd. My younger sister got a new laptop for Christmas, and so I took on the job of making her old one good as new so that it may have some use. I've reinstalled Windows using the Windows Vista reinstallation CD, and everything was fine and dandy until I attempted to install the resource CD which states...

"There was an error launching the ResourceCD Setup program:

A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Please ensure you are running this program from the Dell ResourceCD."

I've looked around the web for several hours and have attempted fixes including a command prompt system scan and defragmenting then reinstalling again. Unfortunately, since the drivers for wireless are unable to install, I cannot go online on that computer to download any program which may do the trick. I believe the issue lies in the fact that there are traces of virus still lingering (my sister got the computer at too young of an age.. completely destroyed it with junk downloads.)

The computer is..
Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Home Basic

Is there a way?? All help is appreciated!! I am very willing to supply additional information if needed.

...get them to send you replacement discs. If you're lucky, they'll do it for a small fee. When you reinstalled Windows, I'm afraid you wiped out the software to recreate the discs.

Good luck.

Thank you for your response wpgwpg,

I actually have three of the same resource CD, and none of them work. Plus, I have access to four other computers. What exactly do you mean when you say I cannot recreate the disks?

What I am attempting to do is very simple and basic. I reinstalled my computer, and I would like to run the resource CD (at least one of them Silly) which came with it.

Thank you,
Jordan

you overwrote the Dell utilities that are used in creating the recovery DVDs. Since you're getting errors with what you have, you apparently need new ones. That's what I meant.

Good luck.

Hi wpgwpg,

Getting another CD of which I already have three of isn't registering as a solution. I don't understand what recreating a disc includes. I'm not attempting to recover or create anything. The reason I believe the CD to not be the issue is the fact that I've attempted to use three different Drivers and Utilities CDs already. I don't see a fourth CD of the same song and dance working. In this sense, I believe the issue to be belonging to the computer. I don't have the utilities installed on the machine, that is correct, as the reinstallation wiped them. Isn't what this CD is for? For installing the utilities and drivers? The CDs work on other PCs.

Thank you,
Jordan

You can download the drivers on another PC

and copy them to a flash drive, then install them on the old PC, if that's what you need. It's not clear to me what you're trying to get from the resource CD. If it's drivers, just go to the Dell website, click Support, put in the service tag, and download them. If it's programs, if you have the resource CD that matches the computer, I don't know of any reason that wouldn't work. They do check though to make sure they match, so I'm wondering if maybe that's why you're getting the error(s).
