Question

Dell Precision M4800. Cannot find another two DIMM slots?

Feb 20, 2015 4:13PM PST

Hello guys.

I am Dell Precision M4800 laptop. I have 4GB x 2 pre-installed memory modules on laptop and would like to upgrade to 4 x 8GB. According to the specification for thi laptop it has 4 DIMM slots. I have already found 2 slots right under the lid but cannot find another 2 slots. Could you give me a hint as to where the other two DIMM slots please.

Thank you.

If you go to crucial.com their memory finder lets you choose between the M4800 with 2 SODIMM's and the M4800 with 4 SODIMM's. So maybe you have the one with 2? In that case 2x8GB is the max. But be assured that that's enough for 99,9% of the users.

Did you use your Dell service tag to find the details of your laptop? Those should include the exact specs and all manuals.

If you can use them they're underneath the keyboard.

Hi,
To answer your question. The CPU determines how many memory banks can be operated as explained HERE To QUOTE Dell: "NOTE: For 2 SoDIMM configurations, use only the bottom memory slots." This takes away your doubt if they are even there.

But, even if you have a 4 core CPU it will still only have 2 channels to the memory. So 2x8Gb of memory at 1866MHz Should be more interesting then 4x4Gb at 1600MHz. Also a 64-bit instruction set is more interesting then a 32-bit set. Therefore the term GT/s is better.
As an example an
i7-4810MQ CPU

If you can use the additional 2 slots, then you should download the owner's manual. You'll have to remove the keyboard and probably palm rest to access the 2 "upper side" memory slots. So if you have a 2 core CPU you might want to sell the memory and get 2 modules at 1866MHz (max. 16Gb for 2 core CPU).

A SSD-SATA3 and a nice GPU will boots your system, those 4Gb modules will probably hardly be used and collect dust.
