I have a refurbished Dell Latitude CPt laptop. The machine is running Windows 2000. The computer is configured as an Administrator's computer for Windows NT workgroup.
I want to install Windows XP Pro OS and have three related questions.
1. If I install Windows XP Pro over the Windows 2000 operating system will the previous OS - Windows 2000 be completely erased? I ask because...
2. At the moment I have to press CTRL-ALT-DEL and then type ''Administrator'' into the logon box (no password is needed)in order to get to the desktop. Also, as a stop gap I've installed MS Office 2000 onto the machine because it did not come with any sotware at all. I did this with my own original MS Office software and the licensing information assigned to the software.
The installation went fine. However, afterwards I notice that instead of showing my name and my license, the software has registered itself under the name of the company who used to own the laptop along with their license number!
They obviously had MS Office 2000 loaded on the system before and for some reason the computer pulled their information up (I guess from the registry) rather than loading the software under my name, initials, and license number. Will these issues be erased once I update the operating system?
3. I attempted to install XP Pro operating system on the machine once. I ran the diagnostic on the XP installation disk so that it could check the machine to make sure that it is compatible with XP Pro. It seems as though everything is compatible except for the touchpad. The computer uses ALPS Touchpad as a pointing device (mouse). The installation CD said that XP Pro is not compatible with this device and that there may be upgrades to ALPS software that will enable it to work with XP Pro. My question is, how interchangeable are ''Touchpad'' programs. If ALPS does not have an upgrade can I use another program as a pointing device for my laptop?
I know this is a lot. I hope my questions were clear enough. I know nothing at all about laptops and don't want to screw the thing up so that I won't be able to use it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
