Dell Laptop will not read DVD

by Charlorne / February 27, 2009 7:35 PM PST

I have no problems with a CD but nothing shows on
a DVD although I know there are files there and
it reads just fine on another laptop.

I can burn the DVD with no trouble. Just can't read it after.

Both drives D and E are visible.

The only difference is in the properties...in the Drive E there is no recording option after sharing
eg general, autoplay hardware(all working oK) sharing recording

Any suggestions gratefully received Happy

We do not know how you are burning the DVD ...
by Edward ODaniel / February 28, 2009 5:06 AM PST

(a program such as Nero or K3b or drag and drop via InCD or other packet writing software) and you don't mention whether the OS is XP Home, Pro, Linux, DOS, Zenix, OS X, BeOS, or what.

You also don't make clear whether the burning and reading is happening on the same PC or different PCs.

You also haven't mentioned whether the drives D: and E: that you mention are both CD/DVD drives or if one is possibly CD only (which we could ascertain if we knew what the drives actually are.

Immediately above where you typed your Subject title there is a note in RED TEXT that says:

The specifics mentioned in that note would include make and model of the drives. You have to help us help you.

I appreciate the reply

thank you for replying, Edward

I use Ashampoo burning Studio 6 to burn my CD and DVDs on the same PC as I read them

My D Drive is DVD-RW Drive or if I insert a CD it changes to CD-RW
and E drive is called DVD Drive

I have Windows XP

Hardware: Drive D and E Type
TOSHIBA MK 1032GSX Disk Drive
SONY DVD+RW DW-Q58A DVD/CD-R
MK5088N OKH2217N SCSI CDRom Device DVD?CD-R
This device is working properly.

I hope this is a better explanation.

Thanks for the additional info, ...

now try opening Ashampoo and taking a look at the burned DVD. Does it offer the option to burn more files to it as a multi-session?

I ask because it now sounds like you are not FINALIZING the burn and since I don't use Ashampoo I can't step you through the settings to ensure that the disk is finalized so you will need to check that in the application's help (although I seem to remember hearing that when burning Ashampoo offers you the option of how to burn, ie; to play on any cd/dvd player etc, and selection what I bolded this will finalize disk.
