Question

Dell Laptop "Paints" Slowly

Aug 21, 2015 2:53PM PDT

Hey there, I recently got a broken Dell Studio 1747 from a friend, saying they didn't need it anymore. What they forgot to mention was they didn't need it anymore because it was useless. When you turn it on, the screen is set up into two parts: A very, very small horizontal part that actually works as a display, and a black screen. These are separated by a very thin white line. Slowly, VERY, VERY slowly, the display part actually grows. I broke in, disconnected and reconnected the screen, but it still doesn't work. Any Ideas on what it may be?

Which 2010 1747 is it?
Aug 21, 2015 3:05PM PDT

That's a partial model number but the effect has been seen with heatsinks that had fallen off or the heatsink dried and cracked to bad hard drives and nasty infections.

Pull out the HDD and ODD and test run some USB based Linux to see if the speed is better.

As a laptop tech you know what to do about the compound. If not, youtube.

Never post your service code.

As to no HDD, since Windows doesn't run off USB or CD except for versions that would be too slow to mention I have to write that the missing detail means my guesses are way off.

Try telling more

As to Linux try other distros.

The thing is, the display does not work. It simply will not display more than a fraction at the top.

You did you did try booting a Linux dvd/usb right?

Dafydd.

The linux distro would be useless.

Didn't Work
Aug 21, 2015 6:03PM PDT

Heya there. I couldn't find an hdmi cable, but I used a VGA one. It still didn't display.

- Collapse -
Starting to sound as if it's really broken.
Aug 21, 2015 6:24PM PDT

If internal and externals are failing I think the best move it to sell it as-is on Ebay.

- Collapse -
Yeah...
Aug 22, 2015 6:47AM PDT

I know that, but I REALLY wanted to be able to use this computer (kinda to prove that I CAN fix it). All I really need to know if you guys think it might be the screen or the video card. I'll post a few pictures in a minute as well.

Obtain the parts you think have failed
Aug 22, 2015 7:50AM PDT

And install those. I don't see a clear clue about which one it is but looking at motherboard prices I can get a new laptop for that much. That's why I think it's best to sell it on Ebay and move on.

- Collapse -
Yeah...
Aug 22, 2015 11:30AM PDT

See, I'm not sure if it is the screen or the motherboard. You're leaning to the motherboard?

- Collapse -
Or the cable from to those.
Aug 22, 2015 11:36AM PDT

There's an old tech advice that applies here. Ready?

"When you are unsure which parts are broken,
replace the cheapest part first."

- Collapse -
That's Genius
Aug 22, 2015 5:18PM PDT

Y'know, that actually might be right. I did take it off and wiggle it around, and it didn't make a difference, but I think I'll get one. it is cheapest, after all.

- Collapse -
Uh.... Nope.
Aug 23, 2015 5:17AM PDT

It actually didn't work. I took it out of one of my old dell studios, which said was fully compatible, and it didn't work. So, should I go for the screen or the motherboard now?

- Collapse -
Coin toss from here.
Aug 23, 2015 6:27AM PDT

I'm not there so I can't tell which it might be. Could be either.

- Collapse -
Well, Thanks.
Aug 23, 2015 8:37AM PDT

Alrighty. I really appreciate the help.

- Collapse -
On second thought...
Aug 23, 2015 8:45AM PDT

Given the fact that I've connected it to four different external monitors, with two different cables, is it safe to say I should try replacing the motherboard first?

- Collapse -
IF!!!!
Aug 23, 2015 6:36PM PDT

If the fault shows on externals, it points back to the motherboard.

What's it look like

if you restart and go into the BIOS ?
Is it still the same thing?

Great News
Aug 24, 2015 7:31AM PDT

So, I changed my resolution within hiren's, and the line didn't move.

I plugged it into my TV and then I did fn + f2, and it popped right up on my screen!

I ordered a screen, and I'm going to replace it. Thanks so much, yall!
