Dell laptop not fully vista ready

by _ajayan / April 8, 2007 3:40 AM PDT

I recently bought an inspiron Dell 630 with vista premium.I am not getting the 3D effect or the aero features. When checked I came to know that it was due to the integrated graphics, Can I change the graphic card Is it expensive or Do I have to change the mother board itself will it be expensive?

Which model?
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / April 8, 2007 4:00 AM PDT

It's unlikely with any GMA or shared memory video controller to get the Aero interface. But this does not mean it was not Vista ready. There's a longer discussion in the Vista forum but with just a bit more information about the laptop this and the upgrade question could be dispensed with quickly.

Just one note, that upgrade if possible will be from

How much RAM do you have? How much shared memory does your graphics chip have?

A GMA950 runs Aero fine.
by fbbbb / April 9, 2007 10:30 AM PDT

I'm not familiar with an Inspiron 630 but if you've just bought it and it is equipped with integrated graphics than it will definitely have a GMA950. Perhaps the problem is elsewhere.

On doing more research...

Is this a 630m? In which case it's a fairly old computer, equipped with a GMA900 core. That won't do Aero, and you're pretty much SOL as far as graphics card upgrades are concerned.

Hmmm... As I said, the GMA950 shouldn't have any problems with Aero. Have you tried talking to Dell?

In reply to: Oh so it is a 640.

I have a Dell E1505. I must acknowledge, I have a better configuration than you : mine is equiped with 1.5 GB of RAM and an ATi Mobility Radeon X1400. My laptop is runnin Vista Ultimate very smootly.

But I'm sure that the IGMA 950 is compatible with Aero Glass Interface.
