DELL Inspiron- NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED

I have currently purchased a Dell Inspiron 640m and at the start the speakers intergrated on the laptop worked perfectly.

However now when i try to play audio or video files there is no sound (on video there is video but no sound)

At the audio sign there is the Speaker icon with a red and white X, similar to the mute sign however when you scroll over it, is says:

No Audio Output Device is installed

how do i solve this problem and regain access to sound on my laptop?

Which Cards?
Oct 7, 2007 3:20PM PDT

Hopefully, you wrote down the specific name of ALL of the hardware listed in Vista's "Device Manager". You can then look up the XP compatible drivers associated with that hardware. If you don't have specifics as to which devices are installed, it's tough to find specific drivers.

Hope this helps and let us know more.

Lost microphones,
Sep 14, 2010 1:42PM PDT

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525, I was having a problem with "Dragon Naturally Speakin 10.0 & 10.1 Speach regconition program to see the mic's. Somewhere someone suggested to disable the following:
'microphone/line in, Sigma Tel High Definition Audio Code C' and
'Microphone array, Sigma Tel High Definition Audio Code C'
And try my USB mic. That still did not get the program to work. I then tried to enable the mic's. And when I click on the record tab, I get;
"No audio imput device installed"

I do see the drivers

Thanks

No sound on Dell Vostro 230 minitower
Aug 23, 2011 9:09AM PDT

Went to the link you provided and that didn't work. Called Dell technical and got someone in INDIA who spoke poor English. Says we have to pay for software. Bought this 13 months ago and the sound has never worked. Everytime I call Dell, they say we need to pay for tech help. Will never buy a Dell again. This sucks!!! Anyone got any ideas? Says there is "no audio device found" but the darn monitor has speakers on it and the motherboard has the sound card included. Of course, it is made in China, so what can you expect!! Help please.

Just a tip.

Don't bury new requests in 4 year old posts.

Also, many machines need an audio cable from the machine to said display.

I forgot to mention it but I had tried that too during my attempts. The result of Microsoft Fix It was that there were no issues found, everything was working properly. Thanks though.

*Also Missing Sound Driver-
Jun 6, 2007 5:56AM PDT

I'm having the same problem, but with a Lenovo(IBM) Desktop(7387-A11).Vista came pre-installed when I purchased it on 2/29/07. The sound worked fine until about a week ago. Yesterday I spent over an hour on the phone with their tech. support, with no final resolution before having to disconnect. Was sent to the IBM web site ,where I would be able to redownload the suddenly missing driver, but could not get it to work. Just get an error message
"SoundMax _InstallShieldWizard
The Windows Audio Service must be running
but could not be started."

Didn't get a chance to call back yet,but he had told me that if it wasn't successful, that I should just run RESCUE & RECOVER,which would take me back to the original factory installed state. I do have my backup disc with my files, but I think he mentioned something about needing to set up a connection and install other things also at that time, and I;m not quite sure what to do !

I do have a ?modem/router? for my DSL connection from my server,(others mentioned disconnecting)but don't think that that option is available to me!

Any input is appreciated!

Inspiron 6000
Aug 2, 2007 4:44AM PDT

Ok so I got a super deal on an old Inspiron 6000. CO-worker sold it to me for $200! And it has Vista Premium on it. So when I took it home, I re-installed Vista on it because he still had his username and all on it. Everything re-installed and I got it up and running (my first vista machine btw). But I got the ominous message: "no audio output device installed." I tried pretty much everything that everyone has suggested here but I still can't get sound out of this thing. Common sense tells me that there is a driver that is required that isn't present in vista. And that makes sense since the vista is an upgrade. But for the life of me I can't get this thing going. I'm not known for my patience so I've seriously contemplated smashing this thing. Anyone? Help?

Dell Vista Microphone
Aug 7, 2007 9:56PM PDT

I have had trouble with my microphone suddenly stopped working and then became unpredictable and temperamental.
Tried all the driver fixes. Uninstall Sigma reinstall etc. Sometimes worked sometimes not. No knowing.
Fixed: note that the microphone socket is very slightly recessed in cabinet of Dell Inspiron 1501. My microphone plug was too deeply shrouded in plastic sleeve. Judiciously removed small sliver from soft plastic sleeve on the Microphone plug with sharp knife. Presto all fixed now!

Sound driver
Oct 9, 2007 11:21PM PDT

Eureka!

I have discovered the solution to the Sigmatel sound program.

The current driver must be removed/deleted! Then, by downloading
The driver from Dell?s registry updates and sources and reinstalling.
I was able to see the sound icon change to active while it was
Reinstalling.

Perhaps this will be helpful for others also.

Solved the Problem
Nov 4, 2007 4:09PM PST

Well the simplest solution that worked for me(OS_VISTA) was to go to the devise manager and click on the audio driver that was installed and click upgrade. it gives the options of 1. high definition audio
2.sigmatel sudio
select hi def audio and click next to install works like a charm...

I had this problem after i updraded to Vista ultimate from home edition.
Follow below steps for resoultion:

1) Gp to control panel--> Device Manager--> Sound video and game controllers.
2) Right click on "High definition ..." and select uninstall, also check the box.
3) Restart/Put the system in sleep mode
4) Start the system and it will reinstall the driver.
5) Your audio system should work now....

Best of luck
Manoj.

So I have been dealing with this issue for months since I installed Vista Home Premium on my Dell Computer and just now came across this website that saved my sanity!

http://neosmart.net/blog/2006/vista-sound-drivers/

It gives you a complete list of what drivers are compatible with what computers and the links to there websites. I sware I was about to throw my computer across the room. Hopefully it works for you too!!

P.S. Vista Sucks!!

Re-install audio driver
Jan 9, 2009 4:44PM PST

Go to the Dell website and use your account with your Dell code (I forget what the code is called) set for the Inspiron as your default system. Then go to driver downloads and find the audio/sound driver for your model Inspiron. Go through the re-installation according to their directions, and you should be good to go.

I have the same problem with my dell inspiron 1420 with vista home. I tried to update my audio driver from dell's website and ran the saved file and it somehow messed up my built in speaker. I tried following everything that was said here yet it does not work for me. Please Help!!

No audio (no need to look further)
Apr 19, 2009 4:08AM PDT

Goto control panel
Click on system
Click on device manager.....highlight the sound controller.......uninstall the High
Defination Sound Device and uninstall the driver (check box)
restart your computer.
the computer and the system will reinstall both and the upgrade prevents it from happening again.

I have tried installing drivers but still didn't work and this one worked for me after vista upgrades. there are so many wrong suggestion out there.

1. You posted to a 2+ year old discussion so if the fixes don't work, then you buried your plea for help.

2. Bad idea to post a phone number.
