Question

Dell Inspiron 5110 won't boot

Jul 12, 2018 10:25AM PDT

Suddenly my Dell Inspiron 5110 laptop won't boot, after dell screen, just a cursor blinking in the top left. I tried restart several times but no use.

I had run the diagnostic tests, test results are passed. Also i did Thorough test mode on Hard disk, results are passed.

Just want to add, i am running windows 10 in this laptop from 2015 (no issues till now). And yesterday i have uninstalled the Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller -0.96, because its not working and i reinstalled it, still that slot didn't work. So, after that i shut down the system. Next day this thing happens, won't boot after dell screen. Is this problem related to this ?

Can any one help me on this issue ?

Thank you.

Do we need to talk about backups?

That out of the way, be sure ALL USB DEVICES are unplugged. Be sure your USB BIOS settings are at defaults.

If not, go get your W10 install and repair USB stick, boot that and try an automatic repair (how is on google.)

If that fails, try a clean install. The blinking cursor is usually a blown OS.

Thanks for the response. I don't have the windows 10 Disc, i directly updated from windows 8.1 to 10 and i didn't prepare any recovery media. What to do now ?

Any advice on this ?

No W10 disc is no problem.

By backup I have to guess you meant the Windows 10 Disc. That's free to create with the "Microsoft Media Creation Kit." (See google.)

You can create this on a working PC then boot and try the automatic repair first.

Hi,

It could be an io error.

First remove the main battery then the bios battery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRfDy6g15pQ

Hold down the power button then reinstall both batteries & re enter date & time in bios then try booting your computer.

If this doesn't fix the problem inspect each usb port on the laptop making sure that non are damaged. Each usb port has 4 connectors and if ant are touching each other this will cause the problem you described. If touching use a fine screw drive to move them apart.

If you have a problem with Windows 10 then simply download it from this url https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Using Create Windows 10 installation media on another computer & making an iso file on either a DVD or USB stick. When Win 10 is installed and you connect to the internet it will be activated as your digital licence is linked to your laptops motherboard serial number.
