Dell INSPIRON 1501 will not boot.

Jan 12, 2009 6:18AM PST

I have a Dell INSPIRON 1501 that will not boot. When I boot it from the CD drive I get a message that says "can not find operating system". I have run the diagnostics disc and all is OK except the short test-hard drive report has a red X on it.
I am very grateful for any help, thank you.

Have a new hard drive on order. Would appreciate help on reloading operating system. Will the computer see the new hard drive so that I can reinstall the OS. If not what is the procedure for the new installation?
Thank you

Dell INSPIRON 1501 will not boot

Have installed new drive and reloaded the operating system. Absolutely no problems. I am a long time Mac user and was repairing granddaughter's computer, so was sort of apprehensive about working on a PC. Thanks so much to all who responded.
