Usually there is a sticker on either the top or the rear (sometimes both) of the unit. Older models will just have a white sticker with a 5-7 alphanumeric code, and newer models tend to have a black or white sticker that will actually say Service Tag. You should also be able to look up the service tag from the BIOS configuration program.

Finally, if this is a unit that shipped with say Windows 7, and you're trying to get XP running on it, do not hold out a lot of hope. If it shipped with XP, and for some reason your driver disc isn't working, then you should be able to find what you need on Dell's site.

you no longer have or can't find the paperwork then you can use BELARC ADVISOR which will show the Service number somewhere in the upper right section of the scan results screen.

Dell Dimension 2400

I checked through your posts and can't see where you told us the model number before. I have to wonder why it has taken so long.

Personally I wouldn't trust such 3rd party "driver" sites. I would always get the necessary drivers from the manufacturer's web site.

Edward has already suggested a utility to download and run to inventory your system to find Dell's "Service Tag" number for your system. That Service Tag number is unique to your computer, It is yours. So by simply heading over to Dell's web site and inputting that Service Tag number you will be taken to a web page that lists all the drivers you need for this computer. It is that easy.

But you say nothing about whether you have done that.

You also fail to explain other things as well, for example, "I have the disk but it will not start". What disk, and what doesn't start? What do you see when you try? What error messages?

Sorry, but it is time for more information if you need to go further with this. Telling half the story or no story at all, neither helps us nor you.

Hi
My name is Kishan and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.

There are two ways to get the drivers installed on your system
One you can use the driver and utility cd to get the driver installed or
You can install driver for free form the below website
Visit www.support .dell.com
Home user support
Click on driver and download
Put the service tag(can be found at the back of the tower alpha numeric code on a bar coded sticker on desktop or underneath on the laptop)
Click on submit
Choose the operating system
And click on audio
And click on download file
Restart the system

Hope this will resolve the issue

Thanks,

May I ask?
Jun 15, 2012 5:38AM PDT

Kishan, may I ask about the very end of your post.

You said, "And click on download the file. Restart the system".

What then?

Should the user click to download the file then restart the system immediately, or wait for the file to finish downloading? What should the user do with the file once it is downloaded?

Sorry, I am not being obtuse, but some may follow your instructions to the letter then not know what to do after the restart.

Thanks for your help.
