General discussion

Dell Dimension E310 or E510, can't decide.

Which Dell desktop PC would be a better choice to use to do word processing; web surfing, emails and some Quicken? If someone can recommend which computer to select and explain why; I would appreciate it.

I was at one time also considering a Dell XPS 400 but have ruled that model out since others have said that machine would be considered to be overkill for my basic computer needs.

My problem is that I have read too many reviews and last night on this website I read review comparisons on all 3 Dell models.

The biggest plus I read about the XPS 400 was that if you bought an XPS you would have a much better level of tech support than you would if you purchased either the E310 or E510.

What's this I also read on this forum several days ago about a new processor or computer by Dell being introduced later today; July 14th? What's that all about?

"What's this I also read on this forum several days ago about a new processor or computer by Dell being introduced later today; July 14th? What's that all about?"

It's a new processor being introduced by Intel called the Core 2 Duo, and it thrashes the Pentium D and Athlon 64 X2 in benchmarks. Sorry to confuse you with that July 14 release date; the actual date is July 27.

Nathan:

Which machine would be better for my non-gaming computer needs? The Dell Dimension E310 or the E510?
I believe the E510 has a duo core processor while the E310 doesn't but I read several negative comments about the E510 by checking desktop reviews on the CNET website and entered Dell Dimension E510 in the search field.

I did the same for the Dell Dimension E310; read more favorable comments for that machine except for references to it being limited in what it can do verses what the E510 can do.

I then entered Dell XPS 400 and read many positive comments by other posters; some said that you were guaranteed to receive a better level of tech support from Dell if you purchased a Dell XPS 400 while a few said that they didn't; they considered it to be the same as a non-XPS Dell.

About that new processor that you now say is set to come out on July 27 and not July 14, should I wait on making a purchase until after that time or consider waiting longer for those AMD units which I read somewhere would also be coming out on new Dell's sometime soon? Exactly when I don't know; it was something I read on another website.

''Which machine would be better for my non-gaming computer needs? The Dell Dimension E310 or the E510?''

The E510 because it has a dual-core processor, and you're not limited to integrated graphics, which use CPU cycles, and eat up system RAM.

''I believe the E510 has a duo core processor while the E310 doesn't but I read several negative comments about the E510 by checking desktop reviews on the CNET website and entered Dell Dimension E510 in the search field.''

What were the negative comments saying?

''I then entered Dell XPS 400 and read many positive comments by other posters; some said that you were guaranteed to receive a better level of tech support from Dell if you purchased a Dell XPS 400 while a few said that they didn't; they considered it to be the same as a non-XPS Dell.''

I think that you get better customer support with the XPS line because you pay more for the computer.

"About that new processor that you now say is set to come out on July 27 and not July 14, should I wait on making a purchase until after that time or consider waiting longer for those AMD units which I read somewhere would also be coming out on new Dell's sometime soon?"

I'd wait for the Intel Core 2 Duo, which outperforms all the AMD processors. I find it strange that Dell is talking about going to AMD processors just as Intel is about to release their new CPU which spanks the AMD processors. I'd definately wait for the Core 2 Duo.
