Dell does make a pretty good computer with latest technology in the desktop 8400 series (6xx with the 64-bit support) that is upgradeable and can be configured at a less cost than their top end XPS models. The 9100 Dell also comes up with very good bargains, but you need to keep track of them (all Dell's) weekly as they change their setup sales, prices, free items, each week, usually on Tuesdays. I would suggest observing for at least 6 weeks and somewhere in that time frame getting a very good deal.

Course' like HP there are complaints about the off shore support service and justifiably in many instances.
Dell is the largest producer of computers in the US and Worldwide. They made over 31.7 million computers last year. Every third computer shipped to consumers in the US were a Dell, so we hear about Dell complaints more than others, but really Dell is no worse than any other OEM factory percentage wise. As far as self building, many articles conclude you don't necessarily save any $$ building a computer with identical components, but get the experience, satisfaction, and more detailed knowledge of computers and the exact brand of components, along with bragging/chest puffing.
Dell has stopped routing U.S. technical support calls for its OptiPlex desktop and Latitude laptop computers to India. Several research firms announced that Dell customers had complained about language problems and delays in escalating enquiries to senior technicians.
This move by Dell affected mostly corporate customers who are the major owners of OptiPlex and Latitude computers. It is my understanding that some consumer calls are routed to Scotland or Texas, but most Dell owners of home computers may still be routed through India. So if you want to change that, you will have to continue to complain to Dell.
