Dell Dimension 3100 Boot problems

Aug 1, 2009 10:41PM PDT

Hi All, This seems like the correct place to be!
I have a Dell Dimension 3100. Never had any problems with it, until now that is. About two weeks ago, mcafee went down and wouldn't update. Over that weekend I got hacked and somebody tried to syphon money from my account, luckly,my bank was on the ball and stopped it! However my P.C. started slowing down and not responding etc. I ran a few tests with Mcafee (when it did update) and Iolo system mechanic and all seemed ok. Now my P.C has shut down and will not re boot! I am running windows XP home edition, I cannot find a windows disc to reboot from. I have followed advice about trying to safe boot etc etc but cannot get past
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

The system freezes at this point. I have also tried the advanced windows menu, but it doesn't show the repair function! should it?
I have another legal windows XP disc, can I use to that to re-install? will it still keep my settings and files?. Any help from you genius' would be well recieved

thanks Jimmy

It would not keep files, a clean restore seems your best option at this point, unless you can unload you're BIOS and reset its settings. is your HD SATA or IDE? Anyways it seems your best option at this point in time is to re-install Windows XP Home, I myself have a Dell Dimension that I have kept safe from hacking. I actually suggest that when you re-install you do not use McAffe, I have found its not relabile for securing your computer, if it wont let you fresh install XP, I suggest getting on someones computer, burning a Ubuntu CD or making a bootable USB and booting your computer from that, then you get on and go into the terminal and type: sudo install get gparted, (or something like that, I have not used Ubuntu inawhile, mabye search it up in mozilla because Ubuntu have Mozilla Firefoz pre-installed) once it install format format your partition, then delete it. Then allocate it and re-install XP on it. Thats the only way to get Windows back from that Linux OS. Then there you go, a fresh install of XP is on your computer!
