That's a good price for the refurb and I'd do that. Even on Ebay you might fetch that for a working refurb, maybe more.
The x50v is nice, but I haven't tried it so I can't comment if it locks up less often.
My Toshiba 805 has the same issue with having to be within 10 feet of the base station. My HP rx3115 works like your normal 100 foot range.

I recently dropped my Toshiba E740 and the liquid crystals have gotten messed up and now the screen is very white and I am just about unable to see anything. I called Toshiba tech support and they will send me a refurb for $139. I then looked into other PDAs and I thought the Dell Axim X50v would be a good choice, and it cost $424. I cannot decide on whether I should go with the Toshiba or the Dell.
On the one side, the Toshiba freezes AT LEAST once daily resulting in data loss if I have not backed up, the fast processer doesn't really deilver noteable performance, and there is most assureadly something wrong with the Wi-Fi card as sitting 10ft from my wireless router I got a 69% signal. The battery doesn't last ANYWHERE near 7 hours (the mfr battery rating). And soon, the technology will become obsolete.
The dell got a 7.6 (excellent) from both the editors AND the consumers, a rareity. And, it has a bright screen, something I think will be good for my eyes as the went from 20/50 to 20/110 in one year from staring into monitors, etc (I think my vision has worsened since my last vision test).
So post your opinions, but I need to make my decision before 5/11 when the offer for the Dell Axim expires and the price goes back up to $500. Oh yeah, and the Axim has free shipping.
