On the low customize configuration for the 8400 it has the button enabled and already engaged which reads:
"No speakers (Speakers are required to hear audio from your system)".

They then give alternatives for speakers from $29 to speakers with subwoofer for $59, to speakers up to $289.

I ran across this when I purchased a Dell for my Brother last year.

Just go to one of your local stores, like Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Office Max, or Office Depot, and get a pair of computer speakers from $5 on up. I got a pair free after rebate from Office Max once (course low grade, but work) Wink.

Umm, no, they need external speakers. That is why if you get it from Dell, they provide and surround sound system.
