Dell 6000....Shoud I wait for dedicated graphics?

Jan 19, 2005 9:11AM PST

I have been waiting for the new laptops to come out for some time, and was very excited to see the new dell 6000 finally appear. I am almost sold except for one thing...the integrated graphics. I will not be using the notebook for games, but will be doing some light editing of home videos. Should I wait for the dedicated graphics to become an option or will it not make much of a difference for my simple video projects?

If you read this article just posted today by Cnet, 2 chipset versions are released and the 2nd is for a dedicated video solution like the new ATI X600 dedicated video.

So, yes, if are a gamer or have more advanced video needs you should still get dedicated video. However, the integrated video has been improved with the new Alviso chipset to the point that less people will need dedicated video than before.

However, as before, you have to get dedicated video upfront if you want it unlike a desktop ........

I agree with Ken. One interesting thing that the Sonoma platform offers is PCI-Express. PCI-X allows TONS more bandwith for video. So between the 8600 with dedicated AGP graphics which you can get now, or waiting for the 6000, with PCI-X graphics, the 6000 has about twice the bandwidth.
