Deleting Problem

Feb 19, 2004 4:15AM PST

Ok. I have a Windows XP version of a Compaq Presario and I am having trouble deleting a file. Someone has gotten into my computer and some files under the name of Gator, Gator Client Application, GAIN PUBLISHING, GMT, and CMEII. My firewall tells me that they are a virus and I need to delete it. I have tried every path that I can possibly think of. My virus scan is McAfee. Can you provide me with some information that will possibly take care of the problem??

Removing Gator isn't hard, but it requires downloading a program called Ad-aware. This program scours your computer inside and out, checking for any known spyware or "adware" components. Ad-aware gives you the option to delete anything it finds and remove it from your system.

Here's how to use Ad-aware to remove Gator:

Launch Ad-aware.
Under "Sections to scan," place a check mark next to My Computer.
Single-click the "Scan now" button.
If Gator was removed from your computer already, then you should have about five remaining entries to delete. If it's still installed on your system, then Ad-aware should find about 50 or more entries to delete.
Place check marks next to each entry marked "Gator."
Single-click the Continue button.
Click OK.

Hey Lib,

In addition to Marianna's good suggestion, there is another good spyware removal tool of note. (Gator is spyware/adware and does act like a "trojan/virus") The other spyware removal program is called "Spybot Search & Destroy". Both of the programs can be downloaded for free from the links below. AFter downloading the programs, installing, then updating them, run them and delete all spyware that they find.

In addition, here is another write up about Gator and a manual method to clean it out:

Hope this helps.
