DELETING FILTERED WORDS?!?!

Apr 25, 2006 8:40PM PDT

I can't wait to hear the arbitrary, hypocritical, loony left, politically correct, hippie, dippy, trippy, rationalization for this. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot that issues like this aren't discussed so that you don't even have to try to come up with an excuse; you can just make it up as you go along, as is your want.

Welcome to the kiddie pool, folks. Don't forget your floaties! We want to make sure no one drowns even though there's only six inches of water.

And to think there was once intelligent discourse here ? Mark

As Pat Paulsen said..

...there is a place for censors and we only wish that we could tell you where it is.

Personally, I'm thinking Jimmy Kimmel.

Have you seen the "unnecessary censorship" bit that he does on his show?

BLEEP-ing hilarious - Mark

That was YOUR filtered version, Mark.

Had it been the real filtration, it would have been ******, not a version with enough letters left to understand what the original word was. Furthermore, it was in the header of the message, where it's particularly noticeable. Furthermore, there was no deletion -- only replacement of your version with a milder euphamism. Finally, that was not done by the Moderators -- only Marc and Lee have the power to edit, so clearly they agreed with the request.

This board is supposed to be at the PG-13 level (the other CNet boards are PG), and the forum policies state "The use of inappropriate or offensive language is not permitted in these forums. Inappropriate or offensive language includes, but is not limited to, any language or content that is sexually oriented, sexually suggestive or abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, profane, hateful, or that contains racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable material of any kind."

Use of vulgar language does not elevate the level of discussion!

What movie earned an R based on a BLEEPED expletive?
Apr 26, 2006 7:39PM PDT

The point you're ... missing? ... deliberately ignoring? ... unable to comprehend? ... is that, by lowering the bar to the point at which even an already censored expletive must be replaced by something warmer and fuzzier, TPTB@CNet are making intelligent discourse, especially on certain topics--e.g. AIDS (transmission), breast cancer--nigh impossible. cf. the thread on the banning of the book on manga history.

We've gone from PG-13/Young Adult to the Mickey Mouse Club's Kiddie Pool.

That said, I do commend you for leaving this thread up and unlocked.

I don't like the auto-censor any more than you do, Mark.

But that's an entirely different issue. The point here is that casual use of a four-letter adjective added nothing to your message, and editing it didn't decrease the level of discourse one whit. In fact, it probably allowed some to focus more on what you were saying, rather than the (to them) offensive way you were saying it.

One final stab at explaining myself.
Apr 27, 2006 8:06PM PDT

I'm not saying that the censored expletive I used added anything to my post. (Even though it did. Specifically, it accurately conveyed my frustration with yet another buggy "upgrade" of the forum software. But I digress...)

I am saying that, by your own admission, this board is supposed to be PG-13, and, unless you'd like to provide the names of some films that earned an R rating because they included a bleeped expletive, bleeped expletives are PG-13. So, by deleting the bleeped expletive in my post, you are lowering the bar to at least PG, if not G.

Given that the bar has now been lowered to at least PG, I don't see how we can have any future threads/discussions that explicitly refer to oral sex, for example.
