Deleting File

Oct 23, 2011 6:58PM PDT

Hi all again,

Windows 7

In simple question regarding deleting a file located in
program files.

I need to delete Norton Installer. I downloaded a new
version of Norton Antivirus and I don't need the file anymore.

I need to have permission from the administrator to be able
to do this operation.

I am already log in as administrator, administrator account,
but I keep getting the same warning: you require permission from the
administrator to make changes to this folder.

By right clicking on the file I will not get the option: run
as administrator.

Help please when you have time, not urgent anyway.

I wouldn't do that!

I wouldn't go about deleting odd files from within Program Files folder. You never know what 'critical' file you may detele.

Two options here;

1] Follow Norton's guidance for either upgrading their software or replacing with a new version

2] Or uninstall the old version yourself, before installing the new. Uninstall from the Control Panel > Programs & Features. Then reboot the computer before installing the new version.

You could try deleting the file in the Windows Safe Mode or give this article a read.

I wouldn't!

We need to know more before telling what should be removed and how.

Thanks for your answers.

I was having Norton Antivirus 2011. After the disk crush I
downloaded it again. After a few days I upgraded
to Norton 2012

Before download the 2012 the downloader file/installer was
created.

So, in Program Files I found the following:

Norton Antivirus

Norton Safe Web Lite (at present disable because not
compatible with Firefox 7)

Norton Installer

I was thinking why keeping the Norton Installer of 21.1MB.......if
just needs it to install the product.

I have lots of free disk space so really not a problem......just
don't want any useless file on it.

I was thinking of forget it and leave it where it is.

Before I was having a shortcut on my desktop to the file so
I sent an email to Norton Support and this is their answer:

I request you to
delete the shortcut of the download file from your desktop.

If you wish to
install it once again in future you can re download the latest built from
Online.

I did what they said
but of course they did not tell me to go into the program file and delete the
Norton Installer........still don't know why it should be there.

Stupid of me.........I
think I will send an email to Norton Support and ask them.

Just to let you know.

Thanks

Program Files

Hi Mark,

This is the answer I have received from Norton Support:

If
you have any installer files in the desktop it is safe to delete it and you can
download it whenever it is required. (I did and already delete)

Please be informed that these files may be required for the
program and to store the log files and generally these files are stored in the
"Program Files" folder.

OK, better not to delete them.

Mark you were right.

Thank you very much

Yep, thought so.

We don't usually find redundant files in the Program Files folders even if they don't seem to be doing anything. So it's always best not to simply delete them.
