Delay on Startup...

Mar 7, 2007 7:08AM PST

i got an issue with VISTA. when my computer boot up after the welcome screen, every thing load up real fast then the hard drive just stop running. 20 sec later it starts to run again. during that 20 sec delay i cant open some programs. EX: diskeeper. it says the service is not started. but after that 20 sec the screen blinks and the hard drive start running again. and i can open any program now. help me with this, i hate this problem.

the same thing happens with the wifi network. during the 20sec delay the HP wireless Assistant does not appear and the network system icon has the red x. but i cannot access the network center (nor the control panel).
then the screen blinks and the HP WA appears, connects to my works network and everything goes to normal.

in the event viewer (performance log) i noticed this message:

Windows has started up:
Boot Duration : 61354ms
IsDegradation : false
Incident Time (UTC) : 02/03/2007 20:13:26

P.S. my laptop is: tc4400 (tablet pc), core duo 1.83, 1.5GB ram, NTFS 80GB HDD. it came with windows xp tablet pc 2005 preinstalled and i bought vista ultimate x86 (32bit) and did an upgrade. i installed all the hp compatible version from the hp support site.

P.S.2) i made a complete pc backup and tried the "clean installation" method. the same thing. aftes installing all the drivers it has the same delay. (during the early reboots it didnt have the exact 20sec delay but it had a 10-12sec delay in the logon screen after typing the pass - welcome). i the upgrade installation i noticed only a 3-4sec delay in the logon screen and the full 20sec delay when the processes start.

P.S. 3) with windows xp the statup was a 10sec "job" with no delays and errors...

thank you in advance.
Alex

Mine is doing the same
Jun 11, 2007 2:15PM PDT

It's funny, you described my own situation very accurately. There are only a few instances of this online, but I see it coming up more frequently every week. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 with Vista Ultimate. Even the "reinstall" changed the behavior on mine from pausing at the welcome screen to pausing after when processes start. Please post if you find anymore information regarding this problem, I will do the same.

Update

It seems to be related to the Workstation service. If you set it to Disabled it will not delay, but the downside is that you can't access network shares while it is disabled.

Be Careful...For Most, Not a Workable Solution...
Jun 19, 2007 6:23AM PDT

See the info below:

http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2003-28.html

"If the Workstation service is disabled, the system cannot connect to any shared file resources or shared print resources on a network. Only use this workaround on stand-alone systems (such as many home systems) that do not connect to a network. If the Workstation service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on the Workstation service do not start, and an error message is logged in the system event log. The following services depend on the Workstation service:

* Alerter
* Browser
* Messenger
* Net Logon
* RPC Locator

These services are required to access resources on a network and to perform domain authentication. Internet connectivity and browsing for stand-alone systems, such as users on dial-up connections, on DSL connections, or on cable modem connections, should not be affected if these services are disabled.

Note: The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer will not function if the Workstation service is disabled. It is possible that other applications may also require the Workstation service. If an application requires the Workstation service, simply re-enable the service. This can be performed by changing the Startup Type for the Workstation service back to Automatic and restarting the system."

Yes, disabling this particular service might help where the machine is the only one in the household but many don't have such a setup. Sometimes the delay is actually in the antivirus settings that are set to scan network drives at startup.. Disabling the network scan in the AVP can fix that issue. Lots of services can cause a drag on the system.. The trick is finding which one is causing a specific issue.

Hope this helps.

Have You All Tried These Steps?
Jun 19, 2007 2:01AM PDT

These are from John's "Vista Readme: Vista Tips and Guides" thread at the top of the forum..

Disabling Unnecessary Programs

Performing Regular Maintenance

Using the steps in the first link particularly should help remove unneeded startup programs and services which cause slow startups and boot times. IN addition, make sure you've checked for the most recent audio, video, and chipset drivers for everything..

Hope this helps.
