Degausser running on it's own.....HELP

Aug 29, 2004 4:05PM PDT

My wife has an NEC CRT monitor. Her PC is running Win98. Yesterday, after her monitor had been on for a while, the degausser started turning on by itself. soon it was doing it over and over again to the point where it was hard to do anything on her PC. (Very annoying). We turned her monitor off for the night and it was working fine today, until it had been on for a few hours. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thank you in advance for any help with this problem.

There is NO FIX for this one since repair exceeds the cost of a new monitor. If it was mine and I know that LETHAL and FATAL VOLTAGES are inside the case, I could cut the degaussing wire that runs around the tube. Or unplug it. Eventually that will lead to another problem in which it needs to be dagaussed, but it could give it another month so you can go shopping.

As Robert said, time to shop. Problem is probably heat.
Cut open some of the top air hole plastic and/or put some fan right on top to help blow heat out. This might help for some while. Yes, be careful of the 20kvolts.

The CRT degausser is a coil of insulated copper wire around the face of the CRT connected to the main power supply through a "Varistor", a device that stops the supply to the coil when it warms up after a few seconds of use.
Get a electrician to replace it, if possible. Else, the previous posts hold good!
