Defragger claim true?

May 2, 2005 1:28PM PDT

I'm using ancient Windows 98 and came from a site that said the much faster ME edition is compatible. Is it true that A, they're compatible and B, ME is so much better than 98s? I'm asking because an exe comes with the post. Thanks in advance!

My experience...

I have used ME with unsatisfactory performance in the past and personally think Windows 98SE is much superior. I would not upgrade (downgrade). I'm sure you will get other opinions. If you can swing it, Windows XP is the best software available at this time... not perfect but much improved and more secure over previous versions.

Good luck!

Glenn

I tried this some years ago..

and yes, the ME defragger was compatible, and seemed much faster. If I remember right, you simply copy the new defrag file to Windows, (or wherever your current one is), and rename the old defrag file in case you want to go back.
Think at the time I tried this, there was some question of legality.??

SE defrag article

The one I read didn't seem illegal. It actually provided a site where you can download the file from. Then again, things like that is why I'm posting the question, so if there is a legality problem I'm all ears.

Well, just what I heard..

Been a few years back, but there were comments that taking a file from Windows, and putting it online for others to use, in a different Operating System version, was probably a Microsoft no-no..
I did try it, and it worked well, but I won't try to tell you what to do. I "justified" it by thinking that if there was a better version, M$ should have offered
it as an upgrade to WIN98. LOL. Just my thinking.
Running XP now, so can't help much with details, except what I first posted.
