Defrag problem

by Chuck100 / December 16, 2007 4:52 AM PST

Win xp pro
pen 4
norton antivirus
Win firewall

After I downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger the defrag process wouldn't defrag all the files. I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.

No, that's not a bug. There is no fix planned. For those that must have every file defragmented they need to find other solutions.

No fix is planned.

Dear Bob, when I presented my problem to you I didn't stress that I was preoccupied with defragging all of my files, that wasn't my point. What I want to know is why, as soon as I install Windows Live Messenger, the Windows defragging program stops working properly. Obviously, there is a connection and I'm trying to find out what it is. I do not need all my files defragmented, but I'd like to find out why WLM impedes the process. If you can't help me just say so and please stop being so snaky. Even if I did desperately want to have all my files defragmented you don't have to bully me into not asking any more questions on this forum. Sincerely, Chuck 100

Because MS decided that a new service would be installed and some files locked.

It's that simple. I'm sorry if Microsoft's bullying tactics telegraphed through my post to have you think it was my doing.

Thanks for the response Bob, it is helpful. Also, the use of the work "snaky" in my previous message to you was a typo which I didn't catch. The word I meant to use was snarky, but on second thought I shouldn't have used that work either, I'm sorry about that.
Sincerely, Chuck 100

From some other research.

The WLSetupSvc service could be the one. Try using the NET STOP command on it and see if that helps. I don't have a desktop to try this yet but MS seems unresponsive to this being any issue at all.

Run defrag in safe mode if you have to run it at all.
