open Windows Media Player,
select command Tools>Options
Options tab: File Types
select any or all the types of files you want to automatically open with Windows Media Player.

That should work, unless some other player has locked the file association to itself.

Which version of WMP?

I have WMP 9 and the File types tab is in the Options dialogue window that opens when you open up WMP and goto Tools then Options.
