Default Gateway unavailable

Dec 22, 2009 7:28PM PST

This problem has been going on ever since I installed windows 7 ultimate 64bit

every now and again, the internet connection displays an error and when I use the troubleshoot feature, it says either my default gateway is unavailable or there is a problem with my local area connection 2 (the port my Ethernet cable is plugged into).

troubleshooting always fixes it for a while but the problem comes back. It's much more frequent when I'm playing a game and torrenting something at the same time, but it still sometimes shuts off when I'm just surfing the internet.

everything worked fine with vista before and i have updated the nforce 790i drivers to the most recent ones, and i don't have nvidia network access manager installed. I have turned off the power saving option for my network adapter too, that worked for a while but it still fails every so often.

The other day I tried to use my PC as a router for my xbox so I changed a few things in the ICS and adapters but I changed it back because that ethernet port is broken.

does anyone have any idea what to do, this is very annoying and I reallly don't want to have to reinstall everything yet again, downloading and installing takes forever

thanks for any input,

I see ICS
Dec 22, 2009 9:24PM PST

I've seen this buggy operation with ICS for years. Get rid of ICS from this network. If you feel ICS should work without issue, then I think you and MSFT deserve some time on the phone.

I've learned that lesson and would dump ICS.

ok

how would I go about disabling the ICS. I don't care about getting the xbox online, just about getting my internet working.

You enabled it.

Tell me about drivers.
Dec 22, 2009 11:42PM PST

While MSFT did a better job on finding drivers in Windows 7, it's not perfect. When you see this issue you eject the usuals such as ICS and any other than MSFT firewall as you work the problem.

But there is no mention of a third party firewall (and no mention of the exact internet connection) so the next issue to tackle is the drivers.

Contact the maker of the machine and ask which version to use for:

1. Motherboard chipset.
3. Network card. If wifi, same question.

Do not rely on Windows to find these. Get them the old fashioned way.

Good luck and let's hope there is no TORRENT software in use. I mention that since it can tax the connection, create issues.

I use an Nvidia chipset
Dec 23, 2009 9:18AM PST

I built the machine so I know are the parts

I have an Nvidia 790i SLI chipset in my Asus Striker II NSE motherboard.
I am currently using the latest driver for windows 7 64bit 15.51

the network card is I believe a gigabyte one and it is integrated into the motherboard.

I have manually downloaded and installed all my drivers, I don't rely on the windows updater for anything, it's next to useless for me

If its failing under these conditions.

Then it's either a router issue or a bum driver/card.

To sniff out each:
1. I use the Cnet Networking forum settings for the router.
2. I install a network card. I have a few old Intel 10/100 Pro cards that are solid.

driver problem for sure.
Dec 24, 2009 11:37PM PST

ok here's what I did, I did a ton of searching and found a few options and the most ghetto one is the one that worked

disabling the TCP/IPv6 -didn't work
Uninstalling Nvidia drivers and using default ones- worked for a bit

Replacing a .sys file in the default drivers folder with a .sys file from the Vista x64 patch for my chipset and renaming it to the windows 7 version of the file. - worked thus far, has been a few days without issue.

to all others with this problem, try this.

How about telling us
Dec 25, 2009 7:01AM PST

The name of the .sys files involved in your fix, that would be really useful.

File
Dec 25, 2009 12:36PM PST

the name of the windows 7 .sys file is nvm62x64.sys and it's located in
C:\windows\system32\DRIVERS folder

when you extract the windows Vista updater, you take the vista .sys file that is nearly identical to the windows 7 file except it has 2 or 3 more characters

I would tell you the name but i deleted the driver and thus no longer have the original file so I can't tell you the full name.

Anyway you take that file and rename it nvm62x64.sys so it works for windows 7 and replace in the drivers folder

having the same problem, nvmxxxx.sys file nonexistent

Hi, I've also been having this problem with my 1-month-old Toshiba a505 laptop running on windows 7 home premium. Every so often my NIC will drop my lan connection and windows troubleshooter will fix it, and tell me that the problem was "the default gateway is unavailable." The NIC is a Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller. This problem has persisted for a good 2-3 weeks now, and after googling it many times I've only found solutions for people with nvidia NICs or something that has to do with non-gpu nvidia products, I guess. The only nvidia product i have on my laptop is the gt 230m GPU. I called Toshiba the other day and they told me that since my NIC worked fine for a week or two, it shouldn't be a hardware issue and should be a software issue, and that system recovery will fix it. I've also read online that anti-virus programs like AVG or avast! could be doing something to cause a dropped connection.

At this point I really don't know what to do, I would prefer to not use system recovery, and I would prefer to still have some form of anti-virus on my computer.. I don't appear to have a file called nvmxxx.sys so the above solution doesn't help me. :/ does anyone have any suggestions for me? PLease and thank you

realtek PCIe FE family controller (lan)
realtek RTL8191SE wireless lan (wireless)
nvidia geforce gt 230m gpu (irrelevant i think)

edit: connection just dropped right after i hit "preview post" :c

You added to a discussion that involved ICS.

Maybe your very own discussion would be best. This discussion was to whittle it down to get back to a stock setup. When you added your post to this one I would think you had the same issues and setup.
