The internal graphics chip would still be there, and a port along the back usually. Why wouldn't it?

Ever see that movie "Sandlot"? And the kid asked "Who's Babe?" and everyone gives him that "duh?" look? That's sort of the way I felt when I saw this question, but also realized it's one I'd never heard before.
I have seen high-end laptops which have desktop graphics cards as an external extension to the laptop. Will the laptop work without plugging in this external graphics card, in cases where I need higher portability and don't need high graphics performance, e.g. in a business meeting?
