Deciding between a few camera and need help

Feb 4, 2011 1:47AM PST

These are the cameras I am looking at:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5
Canon PowerShot S95
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100
Canon PowerShot SX130 IS

Looking for a good all around camera that takes really nice pictures. I take a ton of family photos and pictures of my dog. I don't want to go to cheap and I want to have this camera for at least a few years. I love having a zoom which I don't have right now. Most importantly I would like a camera that takes really nice crisp pictures with good realistic color to them. Any help would be appreciated. If you have any other camera ideas in that same price range please let me know. Thanks

You have chosen two very different cameras.

The LX5 and S95 are premium compacts. They have a slightly larger imaging sensor coupled with a brighter, wider aperture lens. This allows them to work better in lower light situations. The lenses on these cameras have short zoom lenses, so if you're very far away from the subject you with to shoot, you cannot get close to it...unless you physically get closer.

The FZ100 is a super zoom camera. It is basically a compact camera with lots of features and a really long zoom lens. It has more bells and whistles than just about anything, but ultimately its picture quality will be no better than a (good) inexpensive camera...because it still uses the same-sized sensor as a $150 camera.

The SX130 IS is more compact than the FZ100, has fewer bells and whistles, and not quite as much focal zoom (but still a lot more than the premium compacts).

Me, I'd probably choose the LX5. It's not quite as pocketable as the S95, but I like that it can take an external flash if need be. You might not be happy with the zoom range though, in which case I'd say the FZ100. If you think you would never buy an external flash, I'd recommend the FZ35 over the FZ100. It's cheaper and takes crisper photos.

There are lots of places (on the internet) to get reviews

Canon makes the best cameras.I had a lot of the best brands of point and shoot and currently use a Canon SD870 IS (second one) and a D5 Mark II. The Panasonics are right there behind them for this type of camera. (The reviews will validate this statement.) The S95 is the top of the line model pocket point and shoot. What's to worry about. You can save a lot of money if you try out more moderate priced models because they will all produce fantastic photos. If you take photos with a large file size (ie large Megapixel) you won't need the zoom so much since you can crop the photo on your computer and get a lot of pictures you didn't even realize you had (and be surprised because they will be better than what you were originally looking to get!) The S95 excels at low light (think shoot without a flash) and this capability will be something you will love when you learn to exploit it. Super nice choice. I always think that if you buy the best you will not be disappointed. In this case there are lots of great choices and none will disappoint you!

So, do you recommend the S95 or would you buy a cheaper camera? I like the option the S95 has but is there something even better out there I should take a look at?
